TORONTO, May 7, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – An Ontario woman is suing doctors for “allowing” her baby to become infected with HIV-AIDS virus during pregnancy, on grounds that “they” failed to test her for HIV. When the woman tested positive, it became clear why the baby had not thrived in the womb, and it was too late to prevent the child from developing the disease. HIV tests are not currently mandatory, although they are simple and available to anyone. While only one in every 1,000 to 3,000 women has HIV, as many as 20 HIV infected babies are born in Canada each year—almost all of the infections potentially preventable, experts say.
