November 16, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) – An openly “gay” ordained deacon in the Archdiocese of San Francisco is currently under “review” as Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone considers evidence demonstrating his flagrant departure from Catholic teaching. In June LifeSite provided evidence of Deacon Brian Bromberger’s explicit endorsement of homosexual behavior and public authorship of smutty material for a local “gay” newspaper to the Archdiocese.

Archdiocesan spokesman Mike Brown said in a recent interview “the Archbishop appreciates your bringing this matter to his attention,” but acknowledged, “We have been aware for some time of the deacon’s past public activities.” He stated that the Archbishop is concerned about the matter and that actions are being taken to “counsel” Bromberger and regulate his “public” activities. He nevertheless currently retains faculties to act as a deacon of the Catholic Church from the Archdiocese.

Regarding the possibility of suspending Bromberger, Brown said that it was his impression that “all possibilities are on the table.”

The evidence includes shockingly filthy interviews for the Bay Area Reporter, a publication that openly celebrates the vice of homosexual sodomy. For example, in his review of the “indie” film “D**k: The Documentary,” Bromberger approvingly describes a film that shows men fondling their exposed members while talking about their “relationships” with them. The review includes an image of a naked man standing with his crotch area blurred.

“One can't help noticing whether consciously (to show their erection) or not, almost all the men were touching their co**s as they philosophized about them, perhaps to combat nervousness or promote confidence,” writes Bromberger. “Overall the tone is celebratory and sex-positive, and the viewer receives the impression that most of the men are happy, even relieved, to talk about what their di**s mean personally to them.”

Other quotations from the review, which include discussions of homosexual child molestation, masturbation, and other perversities, are too obscene to include in this article, but readers may find the full text here.

In his review, titled “Looking for Mr. Gaybar,” of the book, “Intimacy Idiot,” Bromberger begins, “We know we are in for a hilarious time when in his Online Dating Profile that introduces Isaac Oliver's new book, Oliver writes that his typical Friday night is ‘wine in mouth, d**k in hand, hope in heart.’ Intimacy Idiot is a debut collection on the trials and tribulations of a gay 20-something single man in New York City, ranging from Grindr hookups to amusing but disastrous dates.”

Bromberger has written many other approving reviews of homosexuality-promoting movies for the newspaper like “Smoldering Passions,” about the movie “Departure,” which concerns a teenage boy sexually attracted to another teenage boy, and “College Lovers,” about the movie “Akron,” which is about two male college students who enter into a homosexual relationship. In his review of the German film “Jonathan,” about a dying homosexual visited by his former partner, Bromberger approvingly tells the reader that “Some of the gut-wrenching scenes of the dying process will challenge the faint of heart, though a hospital deathbed sex episode is simultaneously romantic and harrowing.”

Bromberger has been writing for the Bay Area Reporter since at least 2014.

Bromberger’s gay workshop held at Height-Ashbury parish

Bromberger lead a workshop on Saturday, May 20, at the “Ignatian Spiritual Life Center” at St. Agnes parish in Haight-Ashbury, called “LGBTQ gifts for the Institutional Church.”

The workshop’s purpose was to “focus on what the Church can learn from the LGBTQ community so as to revitalize her own faith,” according to a St. Agnes parish bulletin. “As a way to better articulate how queer experience can be appropriated in faith, we will use contemplative prayer, especially centering prayer, as a way to build that bridge as well as offering LGBTQ people a model to understand the spiritual implications of the queer experience.”

According to Joseph Sciambra, who witnessed the “workshop,” Bromberger claimed that homosexuality is a God-given identity. Bromberger stated: “This is who God made us to be,” and “We are as God intended us to be.” He even associated the perverse sexual acts of homosexuals with the “love” of God, stating, “Our sexual relationships mirror our love for God and God’s love for us.”

Sciambra reports that Bromberger told the group the Church’s condemnation of homosexual behavior dates from the 11th century and denied that Romans 1:26 is applicable to homosexuals.

The passage reads: “For this cause, God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature. And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts, one towards another: men with men, working that which is filthy and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error.”

Bromberger also reportedly stated that homosexuality is “99% biologically determined” and that the Catholic Church might “change” in the future regarding homosexuality.

Bromberger tells parishioners in his homilies that the Church can’t “judge” at all, and has an “abysmal” record of “maligning” homosexuals.

“Not only Christians, but the Church itself needs to get out of the judgment business. Its record, whether it be the Crusades, the Inquisition, burning witches, denigrating women, maligning gay and lesbian people, is abysmal,” he told worshippers in one homily.

Although members of the faithful, as well as this news agency, have repeatedly contacted the archdiocese about Deacon Brian Bromberger’s misconduct, he continues to be listed (p. 1) by the website of the Archdiocese of San Francisco among the “Priests and Deacons with Faculties (authorization to minister) in the Archdiocese.”

The deacon has been a regular participant in the annual “Gay Pride” march in San Francisco (click here to see a flyer advertising his act of leading parishioners at St. John of God parish in the march in 2011), an event replete with open advocacy of homosexual behavior as well as obscene displays of nudity and sexual perversion.

The Catholic Church, following the words of Scripture and its constant, 2000-year tradition, teaches that homosexual acts are gravely immoral, constituting a sin worthy of eternal punishment in hell. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that ‘homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.’ They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.”

The Archdiocesan review plan

Brown told LifeSite that the archdiocese was aware, and had been aware for some time before being contacted by LifeSite, that Bromberger had been engaging in public activities that were a cause for concern. However, he offered no explanation as to why the archdiocese was still extending faculties to Bromberger.

The spokesman told LifeSite that Bromberger was now being counseled regarding his duties as a deacon and that all “public” activities undertaken by the deacon now must be approved by the archdiocese beforehand. However, he added that Bromberger’s writings for the Bay Area Reporter are not considered “public” because he does not write as a deacon, and therefore were not being reviewed by the archdiocese.

“The archbishop and the office of the permanent diaconate . . . have very recently formulated a review plan, which provides direction and guidance for Deacon Bromberger for any future public speaking or workshops et cetera that the deacon may propose. That’s a new action,” Brown told LifeSite.

“You mention his writings in the Bay Area Reporter. We have not been reviewing those,” Brown added. “He makes his living as a freelance writer. Now, of course, one would wish that he had a vehicle more suitable – he does not write as a deacon – however, this is just a distinction, one wishes he had a vehicle that was more suitable for him to earn his living from, but that is not the case. And so I am responding really more directly about any public role that he might have or might be taking and that was my comment from the review plan that I gave you a moment ago.”

However, when pressed regarding the salacious and immoral nature of Bromberger’s writings for the newspaper, Brown began to speak in his own name rather than on behalf of the archdiocese.

“This is Mike Brown speaking now . . . I’m not on background but this is Mike Brown. That’s part of the review process as well,” Brown said, without elaborating.

“I hope it’s coming through that the archbishop is quite involved in these matters,” Brown added.

Since the interview with Brown on September 1, LifeSite has verified that Bromberger continues to write for the Bay Area Reporter.
