TORONTO, MONTREAL, May 31, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In a statement circulated Tuesday, several prominent Canadian Orthodox Jewish groups denounced the Liberal government’s plan to introduce same-sex “marriage” legislation, Bill C-38.

“As citizens of this great country, we take great pride in our country and the opportunity for religious freedom it has afforded us,” the statement begins. “We are therefore deeply pained by the necessity to take a public stance against the government’s proposal to sanction same – sex marriage.”

“Judaism affirms the integrity and sanctity of marriage, which has been the bedrock of civilization and traditional morality for thousands of years,” the statement continued. “We hereby state, clearly and without qualification, that the Torah sanctions only the union of a man and woman in matrimony.”

“Jews who value the divine Torah and its ideals, carefully transmitted over the ages, know that nothing is more important than to be willing to stand apart from society’s declining mores. As much as the world around us may evolve or devolve, we are heirs to a timeless religious and moral tradition.”

The following groups endorsed the statement: Agudath Israel of Montreal, Agudath Israel of Toronto, Mizrachi Of Canada, Orthodox Union Of Canada, Vaad HaRabbonim of Toronto, Vaad HaRabbonim of the Jewish Community Council of Montreal, and the Grand Rabbinat du Quebec.
