OTTAWA, Ontario, September 21, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Despite an “investigation” by St. Paul’s University administration, the Catholic university’s student union launched a new ‘Pride Centre’ for homosexual students Wednesday afternoon.

On September 18th, the St. Paul University Students Association announced the launch of the ‘St. Paul University Pride Centre’ in an e-mail to students, obtained by LifeSiteNews.

Then, on Tuesday, the university’s administration sent their own e-mail to students alerting them that the university had had “no prior knowledge” of the Centre before it was announced.

“Having been apprised of the situation, the Rector is carrying out an investigation and will be taking any necessary corrective measure,” they wrote.

Despite the “investigation,” the Pride Centre’s inaugural event reportedly went ahead as planned Wednesday afternoon, according to a source at the university. The event, entitled “Queer and Christian Without Contradiction,” featured lesbian novelist Jan Braun.  A Mennonite, Braun has used her writing and other efforts to promote acceptance of homosexuality among Christians.  She was to discuss her novel Somewhere Else, which is about the homosexual daughter of a Mennonite college president.

According to the student association, the Centre is meant to be “a welcoming place for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two Spirit, Queer, Questing and Asexual students and staff at Saint Paul University and their allies.”

LifeSiteNews spoke briefly with a media representative for the university, but did not hear back by press time.

St. Paul University has caused controversy in the past for hosting talks and other events by abortion advocates and dissenting Catholics.
