OTTAWA, August 26, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – As thousands gathered for Ottawa’s annual Pride parade Sunday, the city’s mayor joined in the festivities atop a float that was handing out condoms.

Mayor Jim Watson playfully sprayed the crowd with a water gun from his perch on the float of Ottawa Public Health as representatives of the agency dispensed the condoms.

The float, bearing the slogan “Sex it Smart,” is part of a campaign by Ottawa Public Health that aims to distribute 2,376,000 free condoms in the next three years to city youth as young as 15.

The city launched the campaign in February as part of an effort to stem a pandemic of sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV among sexually active young people.

Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau and Fire Chief John deHooge also attended Capital Pride, each walking alongside a delegation from their department.

Other city institutions participating included the paramedic service, the Ottawa Public Library, and the city’s bus system, OC Transpo. After the parade, the festivities continued with a party at City Hall.

Watson has made news in pro-life media the last three years because he has declared the day of the annual National March for Life as ‘Respect for Life Day’ in the city. He has explained, however, that he firmly supports the “right to choose” and only makes the pro-life declaration in the interest of civic fairness.
