TORONTO, June 18 (LSN) – A report on CBC Newsworld Tuesday detailed a study published in yesterday’s Journal of the American Medical Association, which found pain management for nursing home residents with cancer is woefully inadequate. Although the study was undertaken in the US, Toronto cancer specialist Dr. Mary Vachon said her research has uncovered the same problem in Canada. The host of the segment, Dr. Brian Goldman, said that British research indicates up to 90 per cent of cancer pain can be relieved with proper pain management. Pro-life commentators point out that effective pain management is a crucial factor in helping people avoid the despair which leads to requests for euthanasia and assisted suicide. In Ontario, MPP Bob Wood (PC, London South) is planning to advocate improvements in the province’s palliative care system. He is hoping to hear from anyone with ideas on how that can be done.
