BANGOR, ME, November 21, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) – When a Catholic Church in Maine allowed a pro-abortion political candidate to host a fundraising dinner despite complaints by pro-life individuals, concerned Catholics began a protest outside the church.  Now the church, St. John’s in Bangor, has sought a restraining order and has filed child abuse complaints against picket leader Terrance J. Hughes, a professor at the University of Maine.  St. John’s pastor Rev. Richard McLaughlin, has singed a formal complaint that the graphic abortion signs used by the picketers are disturbing for the children in the parish.  However, Professor Hughes’ wife told LifeSite that the restraining order signed by Rev. McLaughlin suggests that one of the reasons for the order is that donations are down at the parish.  Hughes says Catholic church facilities should not be made available ‘‘to advance the political careers of politicians who support abortion.’’ He is calling on Bishop Joseph J. Gerry to adopt a policy forbidding pro-abortion political activity on church property.  Such policies have been put in place in other U.S. Catholic dioceses.  Hughes says his pickets of the church will continue until such a policy is put in place.  To express your concerns:  Bishop Joseph John Gerry c/o chancellor Rev.
