OTTAWA, Mar 26 (LSN) – Yesterday the House of Commons voted 169-66 to reject a motion brought forward by homosexual and euthanasia activist MP Svend Robinson (NDP, Burnaby-Douglas) to conduct a detailed study of physician-assisted suicide. Justice Minister Anne McLellen noted that a study was already undertaken on the issue recently. A Senate committee study recommended in May, 1995, that assisted suicide and euthanasia remain illegal.  Robinson recalled that in 1994 Prime Minister Jean Chretien promised to allow a free vote on assisted-suicide. While most Liberals and Reform MP’s voted against the motion, the NDP and Bloc, led by their respective leaders Alexa McDonough and Gilles Duceppe, voted in favour of it.
