CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI., May 25, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A rally in support of traditional marriage was held in Charlottetown Sunday, coinciding with the rally held at Queen’s Park in Toronto. Reports indicate that 1,000 people attended.
Hosted by the Queens County Ministerial Association and the Diocese of Charlottetown the rally gathered in St. Dunstan’s Basilica due to poor weather.
One of the scheduled speakers was Elsie Wayne, a former Conservative MP and resident of Saint John, N.B. Also scheduled were a couple celebrating 50 years of marriage as well as one celebrating 5 years. Clergy from various Protestant and Catholic denominations also spoke.
Rev. David Filsinger, who spearheaded what was called a Vigil of Prayer for Marriage and Family, described the purpose of the vigil as two-fold. “The first was to celebrate Christian marriage as that between one man and one woman,” he said, and secondly “to pray and work for the traditional definition as it now stands.”
Filsinger went on to say that “obviously Bill C-38 has not passed into law so there is always opportunity to work and speak against it. It is not a done deal yet.” He said Canadians should expect more from a government than “just caving in to the courts and not doing the political will of the majority of Canadians.”
The pro-family rallies are a sustained attempt by Canadians of all religious and political backgrounds to indicate their disagreement with the Liberal government’s intention to redefine marriage to include same-sex couples.
