CHARLOTTETOWN, Jan 10, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Prince Edward Island, the only Canadian province with no abortion taking place on its grounds, does not see any need to alter its policy on abortion despite pressure from the Liberal government in Ottawa. PEI pays for abortions for its citizens when they travel to hospitals in other provinces to procure them. It does not, however, fund abortions in private clinics. The Canadian Press reports PEI Health Minister Jamie Ballem said Tuesday his government is not infringing the Canada Health Act by paying only for abortions done in hospitals.
