HARRISBURG, October 3, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In stark contrast to the secular pre-occupations of some North American Catholic bishops’ organizations, the Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania have issued a questionnaire to political candidates which addresses only key Catholic concerns. Such concerns, according to Pope John Paul II, are to be considered fundamental when deciding whom one should vote for. All candidates are receiving a written questionnaire from the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference. Results of those questionnaires are to be published in diocesan newspapers before the election. In the 11 question survey, the first 6 questions deal with pro-life concerns, demonstrating the primacy of the right to life in voting considerations. The next two questions address protection of the family – dealing with the forced provision of non-marital and homosexual benefits, and homosexual adoption. The ninth question addresses the right of parents to select funded religious schooling for their children. The final two questions deal with religious freedom. Mary-Ellen Douglas, of Campaign Life Coalition Canada told LifeSite that the Bishops’ questionnaire was excellent in that it put before the public the most important issues of life and family, giving them the primacy they deserve.
