LIMA, October 15, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Last week the Peruvian Bishops conference denounced the attempt of Congress to alter the constitution to leave abortion as a legal option for future legislation.  If the wording is accepted, the constitution would read: “The death penalty is prohibited. Abortion is prohibited but for the exception permitted by the law.”  Zenit News reports that the Bishops reacted saying, “The inclusion of possible legal exceptions to abortion in the Constitution is an attack on life, the first fundamental right, leaving Peruvian children without constitutional protection and exposing mothers to the consequences of participating in the murder of their own children.”  The letter to lawmakers continued: “It would be the first time that it is said that abortion is permitted in a Constitution of Latin America.”  See the Zenit News coverage:  https://zenit.org/english/visualizza.phtml?sid=26284
