TORONTO, December 2, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Canada’s leading pro-life organization is calling on pro-life activists of every stripe to sign a petition to have the country’s health minister Rona Ambrose “definitively reject” the chemical abortion pill mifepristone, known as RU-486.
“This chemical abortion drug is not only lethal to babies in the womb, but it's also potentially lethal to women because of the severe bleeding and septic shock that it's known to produce,” said Jack Fonseca, Campaign Life Coalition’s Project Manager, to LifeSiteNews.com.
“If you care about saving babies from the violence of chemical abortion, sign this petition. If you care about saving their mothers from life-threatening complications and death, sign this petition.”
Last week abortion activists Dr. Sheila Dunn and lawyer Rebecca Cook wrote in the Canadian Medical Association Journal that failure to provide “essential drugs that only women need, including mifepristone, is a form of discrimination that Canada is obligated to remedy.” They urged Health Canada to approve an application by a pharmaceutical company seeking to bring the drug to Canada.
“Millions of women worldwide have used mifepristone safely and effectively,” the abortion advocates wrote, adding that it is “important that this submission not be allowed to fail.”

But within days the Canadian Physicians for Life came out in a strongly worded statement urging Health Canada to say ‘no’ to the drug because of the trail of suffering and death it has left behind in the countries where it is permitted.
“This is death we are talking about, not just of the unborn babies but sometimes of the mothers themselves,” stated the pro-life doctors’ group.
An RU-486 abortion involves a two-drug combination, usually offered to women less than nine weeks pregnant. Mifepristone, a synthetic steroid, blocks the hormone progesterone. This shuts down the woman’s pregnancy-sustaining mechanism with the result that the baby, deprived of necessary life-support, starves to death and detaches from the uterine wall. Misoprostol, given a day or so later, initiates powerful uterine contractions that cause the woman to expel her dead baby.
This chemical abortion method has been linked to serious health problems for women across the globe, including numerous deaths.
A 2011 U.S. Food and Drug Administration report found that 14 U.S. women died after taking RU-486, 612 women required hospitalizations, 339 experienced blood loss significant enough to require a transfusion, 256 experienced infections, and 48 women experienced “severe infections”.
Health Minister Ambrose did not respond to LifeSiteNews.com by press time.
Fonseca pointed out that RU-486 has already been rejected by Canadian health authorities after a woman died in 2001 during clinical trials.
“Minister Ambrose must ensure it gets banned again before it can kill more,” he said.

Full text of the petition to Canada’s Health Minister to reject the RU-486 Chemical Abortion Pill
Whereas Health Canada is currently reviewing a pharmaceutical company’s application to make the dangerous chemical abortion drug known as RU-486 (mifepristone) available in Canada;
And whereas Canadian trials of RU-486 were halted in 2001 after the death of a woman from toxic shock, brought on by a bacterial infection related to her chemical abortion;
And whereas the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revealed the death of 14 women in 2011 alone related to RU-486, plus hundreds of adverse effects;
And whereas in 2006, research by Regine Sitruk-Ware found that of the 1.5 million women in the United States and France who took the drug, 10 per cent experienced severe bleeding;
And whereas RU-486 has ties to the Nazi death camps of WWII, given it was designed by the same company (Hoechst AG, formerly IG Farben) which supplied Hitler with the Zyklon-B gas used to kill millions of Jews, Poles and others in the gas chambers of Auschwitz;
And whereas chemical abortions represent the unjust killing of innocent, preborn children;
Therefore, we call upon the federal Minister of Health to immediately intervene with Health Canada to ensure that the RU-486 application is definitively rejected.
