ALBERTA, July 28 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Calgary police officers dashed the expectations of pro-life Canadians yesterday by announcing that they have found no evidence of criminal behaviour in the killing of newborn babies at Foothills hospital. Following national exposure of eye-witness reports of infanticide taking place in the Calgary institution, pro-lifers expected Canada’s justice system to be finally forced to take action against an out-of-control abortion industry in this country.

“An investigation into the allegations of criminal misconduct concerning the death of this infant at the Foothills Hospital in December of 1998 has been concluded,” reads a press release issued by the Calgary Police Service. “No evidence has been found that a criminal offence was committed in relation to the death of this infant.”  Joanne Hatton, president of Alberta Pro-Life (AP-L), reacted with outrage to the police announcement with comments that insinuated incompetence or cover-up. “How could they have evidence when they didn’t interview the nurses who worked on the unit?”, she asked in a press release issued by AP-L. “Not only did they ignore witnesses, the police have said they only looked at one case,” she added. “The hospital has admitted that some babies have been born alive and died following late-term abortions. Why choose one? Why not look at all those files?”

The police investigation was launched as a result of a complaint filed by Calgary Reform Party MP Jason Kenney and was based on an expose in Alberta Report magazine (May 3). Nurses described one particular killing to the magazine and also told them that they were being forced to participate in other “genetic terminations” against their will and that late-term babies were being left to die in the hospital. Mr. Kenney also dismissed the investigation as flawed, reported the National Post, “saying police never sought out proper witnesses and relied only on hospital documents and records.” The police have not divulged the details of their investigation and Calgary police Inspector Mike Cullen, responding to Mr. Kenney’s remarks, objected that he “does not know all the facts of the investigation.”

As long as the facts remain hidden, however, pro-lifers will continue to seek justice and resolution at Foothills hospital.  “If the Foothills Hospital and the Calgary Regional Health Authority want the air to be cleared on this situation, as they keep alleging, this so-called investigation won’t do the job,” said Ms. Hatton.
