Poll: most Americans want some restrictions on abortion
PRINCETON, New Jersey, August 27, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A poll conducted by Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) for CNN shows that a majority of Americans say abortion should be prohibited in some or all circumstances.
The poll of 1,055 adult Americans, conducted on August 22-23, found that 35% said that abortion should be legal in all circumstances.
However, 47% of respondents said that abortion should be legal only under certain circumstances while 15% said it should be illegal in all circumstances. In all, 62% of Americans wanted some restrictions on abortion.
The survey also asked those who responded that abortion should be legal under certain circumstances, “Do you think abortion should be legal in most circumstances or only a few circumstances?”
Thirty-seven percent of the total respondents to the survey said abortion should be legal “in a few” circumstances and 9% indicated it should be legal “in most” circumstances. Three percent had no opinion.
Respondents were also asked to consider some specific situations under which they thought abortion should be legal.
Eighty-eight percent said that abortion should be legal if continuing a pregnancy would endanger a woman’s life, while 9% said illegal. Eighty-three percent said they supported legal abortion when a woman’s physical health is endangered, while 12% said it should be illegal. Eighty-three percent said abortion should be legal when the pregnancy was caused by rape or incest.
The poll showed that of those who said abortion should be illegal in all circumstances, women were ahead of men by one percentage point.
