VATICAN, February 4, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Pope John Paul II, spoke yesterday in Italy to mark the Day of Life which is celebrated on the first Sunday of February. Before his midday prayer of the Angelus the pope addressed the assembled crowd calling on humanity to “recognize the value of life implies consistent measures from the legal point of view, especially the protection of human beings who are unable to defend themselves”. Society must “guarantee to every human the right … from conception to natural death,”said the Pope in his message. “In the case of the human embryo, science has shown that it is a human individual possessing its own identity from conception,” he said. “As a result, it is logical that this identity should be recognized legally – above all, its fundamental right to life.”
