VATICAN, November 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) – In an address to the Bishop’s of Thailand today, Pope John Paul II called them to have “in every diocese an active family apostolate” where “fresh efforts must be constantly made” to address the “scourge of abortion”.

John Paul said, “The family is under threat from various forms of materialism and from widespread offences against human dignity, such as the scourge of abortion and the sexual exploitation of women and children.” He stressed that “Fresh efforts must be constantly made in your local communities to meet these difficulties.” He also did not shy away from political action urging the bishops to “train the lay faithful to carry out their specific mission in the temporal order, in every area of political, economic, social and cultural life.”
