Cardinal Law Offered to Resign
OTTAWA, April 15, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Catholic World News (CWN) and major U.S. media reported today that Pope John Paul II has called the 13 US cardinals to Rome for an extraordinary meeting to address the worsening situation of priest sex abuse charges. CWN reports that this latest development may also contradict statements made to reporters on Saturday by the president of the US bishops’ conference that the Pope has told the US bishops to deal with the crisis among themselves.
CWN says that sources have also told it Cardinal Law “has offered his resignation to the Vatican but that high-level figures either there or among his brother US bishops convinced Law to stay on, at least for now”.
