BONN, Germany, June 18 (LSN) – Bringing to an end a heated debate among Catholic Bishops in Germany, John Paul II has, according to a report on German radio, told the Catholic Church in Germany to get out of the state’s abortion counselling. For at least 6 years a debate has raged among Catholics in Germany over their involvement in offering counselling to women seeking abortion. The controversy centers around the fact that institutions offering counselling must afterwards issue a certificate which is required to obtain a legal abortion. The pope’s unwillingness to allow the Church in Germany to cooperate with the government on this issue is understandable. The ruling Socialist party which gained power in Germany last year went on an anti-life and anti-family rampage upon taking leadership. In short order they legalized and began marketing the abortion drug RU-486 and in November the government announced plans to recognize gay unions and to give benefits to prostitutes.
