ROME, February 3, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Vatican Press Office reports that the Pope’s condition is stabilizing and he is not in intensive care at the Gemelli hospital. The Pope was hospitalized when he experienced respiratory problems after contracting the flu on the weekend. On Tuesday night, he was taken to the Gemelli, the same hospital where he stayed after being shot in 1981.
Vatican spokesman, Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the Pope’s condition is improving and that laboratory results are “satisfactory.” He said, “The Holy Father spent the night resting quietly.”
The Pope was suffering from acute laryngeal-tracheitis. Navarro-Valls said, “There have been no repetitions of the episodes of laryngospasm that were the reason for his being admitted to the hospital.”
From his hospital bed, the Pope thanked the people of the world for their messages of support and prayers.
