MONTREAL, May 16, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Covering a May 14 speech by Prime Minister Jean Chretien, the Toronto Sun reports today that “Prime Minister Jean Chretien says Canada is a better country than the United States because we’ve got gun control, abortion rights and no death penalty.”  During his speech Chretien said, “We don’t have big debates on the rights of abortion because we decided a long time ago in Canada it is the choice of women, which is not the case in a lot of U.S. states.”  In recent years the Prime Minister has become more strident about his pro-abortion stance.  Chretien, a Catholic, has even gone so far as to spout his pro-abortion rhetoric at a Catholic school for which he received condemnation from Ottawa Bishop Marcel Gervais.

In fact, Chretien’s recent comments in Montreal echo his comments at the March 2000 Liberal Party convention when he indicated that his party, the Liberal Party of Canada, was pro- abortion. Attacking his political opponents on the right, Chretien told 2,600 delegates that “Canadians do not want a right-wing party in this country. They do not want a party that does not support women’s right to choose; that supports the National Rifle Association against gun control.”  See the Toronto Sun coverage:  https://www.canoe.com/NewsStand/TorontoSun/News/2003/05/15/87433.html
