UNITED NATIONS, April 3, 2002 (LSN.ca) – A cohort of strongly pro-abortion European delegates used their statements at the United Nations April 2 session of the Commission on Population and Development to speak in support of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). ln response to evidence showing UNFPA’s support for China’s coercive abortion regime the United States has suspended support to the UN organization.

Samantha Singson, a UN pro-life lobbyist affiliated with Campaign Life Coalition and reporting on the scene for LifeSite said that a Belgium representative began the litany of virtually identical statements from each of the nations supporting UNFPA. Jean De Ruyt, speaking for the Belgian delegation, said his country “deplores the continued and unwarranted allegations against the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) concerning its assumed involvement in forced abortion and genocide.” He underlined his country’s full support for and confidence in UNFPA.

The sentiments were echoed by Ellie Leemhuis for the Netherlands, Bjorn Andersson for Sweden, Gerry Ash for the United Kingdom, Mr. Brunborg for Norway and Charlotte Hohn for Germany. Singson told LifeSite that the statements of support seemed a “deliberate coordinated effort.”
