WASHINGTON, D.C., May 14, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) — Abortion groups yesterday launched a renewed attack on a bill in the U.S. Senate that would ban most late-term abortions.
At 2:30 on Tuesday afternoon, several pro-life leaders joined Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-SC, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY, in a press conference promoting Senate Bill 1670, the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.” Even before the press conference, however, pro-abortion groups were attacking the legislation.
The Hill reports that the Center for Reproductive Rights, NARAL, and the National Organization for Women (NOW) all had “pre-emptive” statements against S. 1670. NOW president Terry O'Neill called the bill “misogynistic and woman-hating, plain and simple.”
Last year, Planned Parenthood decried S. 1670 as “just the latest attempt by anti-women's health politicians to turn back the clock on women's rights.” Yesterday, Center for Reproductive Rights president Nancy Northup said that “the legislative attacks of Senator Graham and his allies put women at risk of grave harm.”

Graham has made a renewed push for his bill, which would ban most abortions after 20 weeks' gestation. Only abortions related to life of the mother, incest, and rape of the mother would be legal. Since introducing S. 1670, which saw its House counterpart pass last summer, Graham has tied a vote on S. 1670 to a Democratic-backed bill that would prevent states from imposing new restrictions on abortion clinics.
In the press conference, Graham noted, “Senator Blumenthal has a bill that’s really a top priority of the pro-choice community, so let’s have a vote on both.” Graham also said, “I think the topic’s worthy of debate. … He [Blumenthal] said every senator needs to be on the record. I agree with that.”
The press conference took place on the one-year anniversary of the conviction of late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell. Gosnell was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder for killing three babies who survived abortions, among other charges. Gosnell was one of the nation's few late-term abortionists.
Graham's push comes only weeks before he faces a primary challenger in his race for re-election.
Approximately 12,000 to 15,000 babies are aborted after 20 weeks' gestation.
