WASHINGTON, October 13, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Catholic University of America Tuesday reversed its decision made earlier this year, to prohibit a NAACP chapter on campus. The decision came after assurances from the group they would not advocate or campaign for abortion rights, as the national body does.  An earlier application in April was denied because the university argued that other groups with similar goals already met the needs of minorities at the school. The university also said that NAACP advocating for abortion rights was contrary to Catholic teaching, which factored into the refusal.  National Association for the Advancement of Colored People president, Kweisi Mfume, threatened to sue the school in a meeting with CUA president Rev. David M. O’Connell over the summer.  The pro-abortion “March for Women’s Lives” on April 25 was endorsed by the NAACP. In February, the NAACP announced that its board voted to take a pro-abortion position on the abortion issue.

“Sadly, many African-American women have believed the lies of pro-abortion groups and have aborted their children,” stated Day Gardner, director of Black Americans for Life, in response to the February announcement. “After all that we, as Black Americans, have endured and achieved, to have the NAACP support abortion-on-demand, which has destroyed over 400,000 Black babies this year alone, is incomprehensible.”  Read the related Washington Post report:  Officials at Washington’s Catholic University Block NAACP Chapter Due to Group’s Pro-Abortion Stand https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A10830-2004Jun2.html   Read the NRLC press-release:  National Right To Life And Black Americans For Life Saddened That NAACP To Support Abortion-On-Demand https://www.nrlc.org/press_releases_new/Release031004.html   tv
