MONTREAL, August 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) – A pro-family organization created to oppose the Montreal Gay Games set for 2006, which was denied an account at the Royal Bank of Canada has filed a human rights complaint against the bank. The “No Committee 2006” was denied all services at a Montreal branch of the Royal Bank. The president of the Royal Bank, Gordon Nixon, justified the decision of the Bank with a statement saying that they refuse to do business with any organization whose purpose is to oppose the promotion of homosexuality. Several attempts have been made to have the Bank reverse its decision. Letters of complaint were written, customers closed their bank account and several Royal Bank branch managers complained to Mr. Nixon, the president of the Bank. Last February, two Royal Bank shareholders tabled a resolution at the Bank’s annual meeting asking that the Bank stop refusing its services to customers on the basis of their political or religious opinions. This resolution was defeated, mainly because of the many proxy votes held by the president of the Bank, Gordon Nixon.
A similar complaint against the Royal Bank is being processed with the federal Human Rights Commission by the Ontario Chapter of the No Committee 2006.
