TORONTO, January 6, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In it’s January 2005 Newsletter, Canada’s national pro-life political organization, Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), has launched a lobbying and post-card campaign against the upcoming federal same-sex marriage bill. In the newsletter CLC tells its thousands of supporters, “The most important task you can perform is to contact your MP in the constituency office and urge them to vote against same sex ‘marriage’ or same sex civil unions. Visit them, call them, write to them or fax them now. Please tell your family, friends, neighbours, and co-workers to contact their MPs too.” Most MPs are now in their local riding offices and will be accessible there until the House resumes sitting in Ottawa on January 31st. The organization has also launched a postcard campaign, which it acknowledges is much less effective than letters, calls or visits to MPs, but which nevertheless will give those who cannot actively lobby some role to play against the bill. CLC says of it’s postcard campaign, “While in the past, prime ministers have ignored million-postcard campaigns, this one is different because it is directed to the MPs. Together, we can defeat this attack on marriage and the family.”
CLC emphasizes that pro-family Canadians let the MPs “know that your vote in the next federal election will be determined by whether or not they are willing to stand and be counted among the defenders of marriage.” Assistance in contacting the MPs is offered at (416) 204-9749 or toll-free at 1-800-730-5358.
REAL Women of Canada has also just sent an urgent letter to its supporters urging action to defeat the bill. The national women’s organization states, “We know the vote on this issue will be close.” This has been acknowledged by homosexual activists themselves who stated in their newspaper, Capital Xtra (November 4, 2004): “It’s still very close in Parliament…and we don’t know whether it would pass or not at this point. There is a lot of work to do, a lot of new MPs who need to be educated and probably persuaded. We’ve got to work hard to line up the votes- they aren’t there yet.” REAL women tells its members, it is necessary for us to convey to these MPs in abundance that their careers as an MP are on the line if they vote for the bill – namely they will not get re-elected in the next election which will occur sooner rather than later.” The national, pro-family women’s organization, emphasizes, as does CLC, that “it is important to note that the most vital work of lobbying MPs is carried out on the constituency level – that’s where MPs really know their political future lies, and this is where they will listen with concern and alarm if they think this vote may lead to their defeat in the next election.”
