LVIV, Ukraine (LifeSiteNews) — A U.S. army veteran turned Catholic filmmaker is asking readers to help displaced people in Ukraine.

Bella producer Jason Jones is urging Americans and Canadians to support his charity’s effort to provide ambulatory services, transport out of Ukraine, food, medicine, and fuel to help save the lives of innocent Ukrainian civilians.

The Vulnerable People Project (VPP), a project of Human Rights Education and Relief Organization (H.E.R.O.), is currently busing women and children from different locations in Ukraine to the Polish border, where they will join some two million other refugees who have fled the Russian invasion of their country.

A special LifeFunder campaign has been opened by LifeSiteNews to support the relief efforts of the VPP in Ukraine.

“Without our help families face imminent danger at the hands of the Russian army,” Jason Jones, the VPP founder, said.

“We have been inundated with requests from Ukraine to help with evacuations because of our continued success in evacuating so many in Afghanistan amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis,” he continued.

“Now we are being called upon to do the same for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, and we are committed to helping people who are in peril. The entire world has been deeply moved by what is happening in Ukraine, and we know the American people stand at the ready to support vulnerable people abroad.”

Irina Skaya, manager of the VPP’s “Hope for Ukraine” campaign, said her team is focused on getting refugees to safety.

“There are children, mothers, and expecting mothers forced to get out at a moment’s notice,” she explained.

“Even though they wanted to stay, we are getting them to the Polish border and placing them in private homes, Airbnb, or in temporary student housing. The funds we raise will aid in evacuation and urgent medical needs,” Skaya said.

Jones’ team needs to raise $100,000 to support 5,000 families as they flee Ukraine.

The Russian military began its invasion of Ukraine in the early hours of February 24. One estimate puts the death toll at between 10,000 and 15,000 fatalities among soldiers on both sides and Ukrainian civilians so far.

LifeSiteNews has been reporting from Poland and the Ukrainian border for several days. Yesterday Tim Jackson sat down with Jim Hale to describe what they saw:
