TORONTO, January 13, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In a televised program with young voters in Guelph, ON, Paul Martin reiterated his determination to add his own interpretation to the charter of rights and freedoms. He said that he would not allow a woman’s charter right to abortion to be taken away.
“There is no charter right to abortion,” said Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) “When the Supreme Court of Canada, that non-elected body which Paul Martin wants to rule Canada, struck down the abortion law in 1988, they left us in a state of lawlessness. There is no right to abortion at all, let alone a charter right. The Judges said at that time that Parliament had a duty to legislate some protection for the child in the womb. Martin commented on protecting the rights of minorities when he referred to women seeking to kill their child in the womb. How about some protection for the innocent victims of abortion, a truly vulnerable minority?” Mr. Hughes asked.
“Paul Martin has gone from being “Mr. Dither” to “Mr. Dangerous”, said Mary Ellen Douglas, National Organizer of CLC. “In the debate this week, he said he was determined to eliminate the notwithstanding clause of the Charter, when the only one who said he would invoke the notwithstanding clause was Martin himself, when he said he would use the clause to protect the churches while he shoved through his same-sex marriage legislation,” she continued. “Paul Martin has a deadly agenda when it comes to protecting life and family.”
Campaign Life Coalition is urging Canadians to carefully consider the candidates they select on January 23rd. It is asking them to support only those who will protect life from fertilization to natural death and who will protect the family which nurtures the next generation.
