WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 29, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – LifeSiteNews.com editor-in-chief John-Henry Westen got a surprise last week when the organizers of the annual Law of Life Summit announced him as the winner of their inaugural Law of Life Achievement Award.

Announcing the award, lead organizer Royce Hood said, “The gentleman who is going to receive this is one of the most humble people I know and he does not know he's receiving it and probably would be fine not receiving it, but he's going to get it anyway.”

The award is a framed replica of the nail that crucified Christ through His feet, made by Hood’s grandfather.

According to Hood, his grandfather said, “Royce I want you to give this to people who have shown outstanding leadership, in this case the Catholic faith, for Christian faith and for pro-life.”

After Hood announced Westen as the winner, to the shock of him and all present from the LifeSiteNews team, the veteran pro-life leader offered a word of thanks.

“All I can say is I've got eight children, and I came from the other side. I lived a life that deserved hell and I was saved by Our Lord and got to Him through His mother,” he said.

Pointing to the nail, Westen added, “Here is what saved me from where I should be and puts me among you great folks. Thank you guys.”

The Law of Life Summit is organized annually by Ave Maria Law School on the day before the March for Life in Washington, D.C.
