ST. LOUIS (LifeSiteNews) – Pro-life Republican Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt won the state’s Republican Senate primary Tuesday with 45% of the vote in a field of 21 candidates.

Speaking at Sheraton Westport Lakeside Chalet in St. Louis, Schmitt said “I don’t come from billions. I come from Bridgeton. I’m proud of my working-class roots. And I’m going to Washington to fight for working families, defeat socialism and lead the fight to save America, the Missouri Independent reported.

He also vowed to fight “President Biden’s all out assault on our liberties.” Schmitt was followed by U.S. Rep. Vicki Hartzler, who received 23% of the vote, and former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, who received 19%.

Republicans in Missouri were worried about Greitens’ ability to win the general election, the Daily Wire reported. In 2018, Greitens resigned as Missouri governor over sexual misconduct allegations and campaign finance violations. Former President Donald Trump refrained from endorsing either Schmitt or Greitens, giving his endorsement to an unspecified “Eric.” Both campaigns claimed the endorsement for their own.

Other candidates that ran in the primary include U.S. congressman Billy Long and Mark McCloskey, who with his wife in the summer of 2020 brandished weapons towards Black Lives Matter rioters in their neighborhood.

One of Missouri’s Senate seats opened when Republican Sen. Roy Blunt announced his retirement last year. Schmitt is running against Democrat Trudy Busch Valentine.

Schmitt has a history of fighting for pro-life causes and fighting against COVID mandates.

He defended a 2019 pro-life law that prohibited the abortion of babies with Down syndrome in Missouri. Last month, a federal appeals court ruled that the law could be enforced, throwing out a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Schmitt also filed a lawsuit against St. Louis last month, alleging that the city was using tax money to fund out-of-state abortions.

Schmitt also subpoenaed seven school districts in early June over allegations that the districts had distributed surveys that promoted Critical Race Theory (CRT) and gender theory.

Also in June, Schmitt joined Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry in a lawsuit against the Biden administration as a result of efforts by Biden administration officials to get Big Tech companies to censor speech, including information about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines and efforts going back to the 2020 election to get Facebook to censor content from Donald Trump and his team.

Last year, Schmitt filed a series of lawsuits against Missouri municipalities over mask mandates.

Schmitt is expected to win the November election.
