OTTAWA, May 20, 2009 (LifeSIteNews.com) – Petitions containing well over 10,000 names were presented to the House of Commons by pro-life MPs in the week preceding the National March for Life in Ottawa.
The petition campaign was launched in anticipation of the march by Canada’s National Pro-Life organization, Campaign Life Coalition (CLC), and called for legal protection of human life from the moment of conception until natural death.
Paul Szabo, MP for Mississauga South, on May 11 told the House, in presenting the petition: “On the week in which the March for Life will take place on Parliament Hill, the petitioners would like to point out that Canada is a country which respects human rights and includes in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that everyone has the right to life. Also, it has been 40 years since May 14, 1969 when Parliament changed the law to permit abortion, and since January 28, 1988 Canada has no law to protect the lives of unborn children.
“The petitioners therefore call upon Parliament to pass legislation for the protection of human life from the time of conception until natural death.”
Petition campaign organizer Mary-Ellen Douglas told LifeSiteNews that signed petitions are still being received and encouraged pro-lifers to continue collecting signatures and sending in filled petitions.
“We will continue to send the petitions in until Parliament rises in June so please keep collecting. At this point we are over 10,000 names. These are being filtered to the MPs,” Mary-Ellen said. She added, “Please take the time to congratulate your MP if he or she has stood in the House to defend life.”
