TORONTO, August 7, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – When a Toronto councillor learned that an upcoming event at which he was to officiate would honor a deceased doctor who campaigned for legalized abortion, he decided to opt out of the event.

Appointed Ontario's chief coroner in 1961, Dr. Morton Shulman was outspoken on decriminalizing abortion, arguing that legalized child-killing would lower the number of women dying from botched illegal abortions.

Shulman, 75, died in 2000 after trying his hand in politics as the New Democrat MPP from High Park and as a salesman for the drug Libido, which he described as “a proven, potent aphrodisiac.”

“After reading up about Dr. Shulman, I don’t feel that I am the right member of council to represent the city, said Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong” (Ward 34, Don Valley East) to The Star regarding the upcoming street-naming ceremony this Thursday.

The pro-life councillor and practicing Catholic refrained from elaborating on his decision, saying he did not want the doctor’s name or his family to be disrespected. He could not be reached for comment by LifeSiteNews.com

This is not the first time that Minnan-Wong, who has served on council since 1994, has allowed his pro-life principles to dictate his action.

In June the councillor walked out of the council chamber in protest over a moment of silence for recently-deceased abortionist Henry Morgentaler.

“I have always been pro-life. Walking out was a matter of principle and personal integrity,” he told LifeSiteNews.com at the time. “Not to walk out would have been a recognition of [Morgentaler’s] accomplishments.”

One councillor denounced the exit as “unheard of, and it is just plain, downright rude”.

Minnan-Wong defended himself saying that it “would have been far more appropriate to have a moment of silence in memory of all the lives that [Morgentaler] was responsible for extinguishing.”
