PORTSMOUTH, N.H., May 19 (LSN) – According to New Hampshire Right to Life, pro-lifer Deborah Mears was assaulted by police “for no reason.” While protesting outside a National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League fundraiser last Thursday, Mears and other demonstrators were ordered by police to move to the other side of the street. According to witnesses, Mrs Mears raised her arms in submission, saying,  “I am not going to resist you,” when approached by one of the officers. That officer then “took her glasses off, and sprayed [pepper spray] her in the face,” says New Hampshire RTL’s Barbara Hagan.  Police claimed the protestors refused to cross the street, and arrested both Mrs. Mears and her husband.  Responding to numerous complaints from citizens about the arrests, police chief William Burke commenced an internal investigation, but said, “preliminary indications are that the officers acted well within the policies of the department.” Mr. And Mrs. Mears are to appear in court on June 15.
