MANAGUA, November 6, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Silvia Pimentel is a Professor of Legal Philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo, she is also one of the most outspoken abortion-promoters on the international scene. As the Vice President of the powerful United Nations Committee for the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Pimentel has pressed many countries to abandon the right to life for the unborn.
Last week Pimentel again flexed her pro-abortion muscles, albeit unsuccessfully, by writing to stop the Nicaraguan Congress from voting to ban abortion. In a letter to the Nicaraguan National Assembly, Pimentel attempted to halt the historic vote claiming that a “right to therapeutic abortion is inherent in human rights” and “protected by international treaties and conventions signed by Nicaragua.”Â
The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute, which is engaged in pro-life lobbying at the United Nations, commented on the Pimentel letter noting that “In fact, abortion is not mentioned in any international treaty. When it (abortion) was mentioned, in a non-binding resolution, Nicaragua and other nations made reservations excluding any right to abortion.”
In her attempt to halt the vote, Pimentel also criticized Nicaragua for listening to concerns from Catholics and other religious groups.“We call upon the Honorable Nicaraguan deputies to postpone the current discussion of the Penal Code and adopt a consultation process to allow for decisions to be based on the defense of the Secular State,” said the Pimentel letter.
When, in February of this year, LifeSiteNews.com first reported on Pimentel’s professorship at the Catholic University, readers were directed to contact Cardinal Claudio Hummes who was at the time the Chancellor of the University since he was the Archbishop of São Paulo. Despite Pimental being exposed at the time as a pro-abortion activist she is still on staff at the Catholic University.
A few days ago, on October 31, Cardinal Hummes was appointed as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy.
