PROFIT TRIUMPHS OVER PRINCIPLES IN US-CHINA TRADE AGREEMENT

WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (LSN.ca) – After 20 years of consideration the US has agreed to permanently normalize trade ties with China without requiring China to cease its substantial human rights abuses and religious persecution. Just days after reports that Chinese family planning officials had drowned a live baby to enforce the country’s one-child policy, and reports that Catholic bishops and priests were arrested, the US Senate voted Tuesday 83-15 to approve the trade measure. The decision was hailed by President Bill Clinton who said: “This landmark act will extend our economic prosperity.”

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jesse Helms criticized the decision saying, “Giving permanent normal trade relations to the government of China will destroy an important lever that we now have and we have had to influence Chinese behaviour. We are tossing it aside.” The move clears the way for China to enter the World Trade Organization.
