TRINITY, Tennessee, March 18, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Protestant minister Donald Sensing, in a Wall Street Journal piece on same-sex ‘marriage’, parallels the birth of the movement with the advent of the pill.

The pill ushered in an age of sex without consequence—the anxiety for a woman of becoming pregnant outside of marriage suddenly vanished. “That led to what our grandparents would have called rampant promiscuity,” he says. “The causal relationships between sex, pregnancy and marriage were severed in a fundamental way.”

Sensing argues that, when the anxiety of having a child outside of the commitment of marriage disappeared, monogamy was no longer an essential. “Over the past four decades, women have trained men that marriage is no longer necessary for sex.” The consequence is a falling marriage rate—43 percent fewer couples marry now than in 1960. Cohabitation has increased by tenfold in the same period.

“The widespread social acceptance of these changes is impelling the move toward homosexual marriage,” he asserts. “Because they are able to control their reproductive abilities—that is, have sex without sex’s results—the arguments against homosexual consanguinity began to wilt.”

As a result of the societal shift in opinion, namely that sexual relations were no longer only legitimate within marriage, “weddings became basically symbolic rather than substantive…what weddings do not do any longer is give to a man and a woman society’s permission to have sex and procreate.”“Sex, childbearing and marriage now have no necessary connection to one another, because the biological connection between sex and childbearing is controllable,” he continues. “The fundamental basis for marriage has thus been technologically obviated.”

Combined with today’s easy, stigma-free divorce, and “talk in 2004 of ‘saving marriage’ is pretty specious. There’s little there left to save.”

In conclusion, Sensing says that “Same-sex marriage, if it comes about, will not cause the degeneration of the institution of marriage; it is the result of it.”  See Sensing’s full article from the Wall Street Journal:  https://opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110004760
