TORONTO, Aug 12 (LSN) – In their August newsletter, Campaign Life Coalition reported on the move by three Catholic bishops and hundreds of Catholic faithful to ask Canada’s bishops for a new endorsement of the 1968 birth-control encyclical Humanae Vitae (on human life). In the document the Church forbade abortion, contraception and sterilization. The response of the Canadian bishops to the encyclical was the “Winnipeg Statement” which was interpreted as permitting Canadian Catholics to dissent from the Humanae Vitae’s prohibition of birth control.  Bishop Roman Danylak, of the Ukranian Eparchy of Toronto, Bishop Colin Campbell of Antigonish, N.S., and retired Bishop Basil Filevich of the Eparchy of Saskatoon, SK. Along with the Society for Catholic Life are requesting a new statement of full support for the encyclical by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. A petition drive is underway to ask the CCCB for a new statement next October.  “This isn’t just a ‘Catholic issue,’” says CLC president Jim Hughes who notes that Randy Alcorn an Evangelical minister in the U.S. has published a booklet on the immorality of birth control.  https://www.catholicinsight.com/humanae/index.html
