Province is “engaging in social suicide by militarily promoting this sterile lifestyle.”

MONTREAL, December 7, 2001 (LSN.ca) – As a homosexual couple is attempting to force the recognition of homosexual marriage through the Quebec courts, the provincial government has tabled legislation to legalize homosexual civil unions. The bill is not expected to be passed until public consultations are conducted next spring, and would make Quebec the only province other than Nova Scotia to allow legal registration of homosexual unions.

The Canadian Press reports that homosexual couples “would receive almost all the benefits of married couples, including health and insurance benefits, a new tax status, and the right to benefits after divorce or death.” Moreover, in presenting the legislation today, Justice Minister Paul Begin said it would make the province more pro-homosexual than “95 per cent of states in the world.”

The separatist PQ government also indicated that if they separated from the rest of Canada to form an autonomous state they would legalize homosexual marriage which they are restricted from doing since marriage falls under federal jurisdiction. “We would be proposing marriage,” Begin said. “We could wait maybe 10 years for the Supreme Court to declare that marriage laws are discriminatory. Or we could have it right away with sovereignty.”

Campaign Life Coalition Quebec (Campaign Quebec Vie) President Gilles Grondin, has been asked to provide pro-family commentary on the legislation on two popular television programs this evening. Mr. Grondin told LifeSite that “the allowance of homosexual civil union contracts would demean the significance of the normal marriage contract.” He said, “The purpose of the benefits accorded married partners are to protect the partners and the children that will issue from that union.” Mr. Grondin stressed that Quebec, with one of the lowest birth rates in the world, is entertaining a move that will exacerbate their “demographic disappearance.” Quebec, which has traditionally been very concerned with its increasing loss of cultural identity is “engaging in social suicide by militarily promoting this sterile lifestyle.” Mr. Grondin asked pro-family Canadians to pray for him as he addresses the public this evening.

While the legislation avoids mention of adoption, Quebec already allows homosexual’s to adopt children singly but not jointly. Moreover, one month after similar legislation was passed in Nova Scotia, the Supreme Court in that province ordered the government to allow joint adoption by homosexual couples.
