LONDON, Dec 1 (LSN.ca) – Reacting to plans by the British government to lower the age of consent for homosexual sex down from 18 to 16 despite the fact that the House of Lords has twice rejected the move, religious leaders, politicians and pro-family groups have banded together. In a letter to England’s Daily Telegraph, Most Rev George Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury, Cardinal Winning, head of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, the Most Rev Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Archbishop of Westminster and leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, and Yousuf Bhailok, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain appealed to the government to stop the destructive move.
In their letter, the religious leaders say: “This Bill makes buggery legal upon boys and girls at 16, an age at which they are still children in law. The House of Lords agreed, as a compromise, an amendment that would have kept the law for buggery for both males and females at 18, but have lowered the age for all other sexual practices to 16, thus meeting the Government’s wish to equalize the ages and avoid discrimination. At the same time, it protects young people of both sexes from the most dangerous of sexual practices.” The letter also notes “There are strong moral and health objections to what is proposed, which also goes against the beliefs of many religious people – Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs.”
