The bodies of what appear to be four young infants were found midday Monday at a storage rental business in Winnipeg’s west end, according to city police.

Police are calling the discovery “suspicious” but have turned their investigation over to their Child Abuse Unit and not Homicide.

“Whatever the outcome of the investigation it’s very, very disturbing, very tragic…for all involved, whether it be the employees of the business or police or emergency personnel and impactful for the employees of the storage facility,” police spokesman Constable Eric Hofley told a news conference.

Holfey also said, “The remains were in a state such as it’s not obvious yet exactly whether we are dealing with four separate remains or three. That will be determined at autopsy.”

Police were speaking to “persons of interest,” but had no suspects.

Three explanations are possible at this point: homicide, natural death, and abortion or miscarriage. Police have told journalists the first step is to find out whether the babies were even born. To that end, autopsies are underway.

Hofley has also said that, whether or not the babies died as the result of a criminal act, putting them in a storage space is itself a crime. “You're not allowed to store human remains in a storage locker,” Hofley said.

The remains were found by employees of the U Haul of Central Canada Company when they were emptying a “delinquent” locker, whose renter had failed to keep up payments.

Spokesman Razmin Mansoub told reporters. “They immediately contacted law enforcement who believed the locker contained human remains.”

Heather White, the executive director of Life’s Vision, an organization dedicated to educating the public about the development of human life, said, “It certainly is disturbing and tragic.

“That this can happen also speaks to the dehumanization of children in our society by abortion,” she said. “We teach that life begins at conception and that these are human beings, regardless of what stage in their lives they are.”
