TORONTO, July 25 (LifeSiteNews.com) – With Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day having been grilled mercilessly in recent weeks for his view on abortion, Toronto Sun reporter Mark Bonokoski decided the Prime Minister should also be queried. Bonokoski posed the question to PMO press officer Sophie Galarneau who told him that the prime minister’s views on abortion are a personal matter and will remain so. She noted that the party’s stand is pro-abortion.

“Is that what the prime minister believes?” she was asked. “I have no idea,” she said, “Like I said, it’s personal.” Asked “So what’s a Catholic like Chretien to do then? Does he choose those tenets of the Church which he likes (as in the ones easiest to uphold), and disregard the rest (as in the tough ones)?” Galarneau replied that it was personal – as is whether Chretien regularly attends Sunday mass.

Bokonski writes that Galarneau is absolutely right about it being the PM’s personal business however, “the Liberals have quite clearly made Stockwell Day’s moral and religious background a political issue, both up front and behind the scenes. That being the case, Jean Chretien is fair game, too.”
