(LifeSiteNews) — A pro-LGBT YouTube channel aimed at children featured a read-aloud of a book about abortion, according to a resurfaced video.
Last week, a video from the “Queer Kid Stuff” channel was highlighted by conservative social media account OdinsMen in which an LGBT activist read a book titled “What’s an abortion, anyway?” The video was originally posted on April 8, 2023.
The book was read as part of the channel’s “Teddy’s book club,” which features a different LGBT-themed children’s book read aloud by Lindsay Amer — the channel’s creator — and posted every weekend.
“I’m excited to read this book because I don’t think there are any other picture books that talk about what an abortion is. It’s a really important idea to understand right now,” Amer said before she began the book. She also shared the dedication, which is “to anyone who has ever had or ever will have an abortion.”
The book refers to “a person [who] gets pregnant” rather than women and describes an abortion as “when someone decides to stop growing their pregnancy.” The building depicted as a place to obtain an abortion is labeled as a “health center.”
After vaguely explaining that abortion can occur by surgery or be induced by drugs, the book falsely claims that “abortion is very safe” and argues that “no matter how someone has an abortion, everyone should be able to decide the way that is best for them.” Reasons for having an abortion, as listed in the book, include women “lik[ing] their family exactly as it is,” “because they can’t take care of a new baby right now” and “because their doctors say pregnancy could make them sick.”
The book also glosses over mixed emotions after having undergone an abortion. After the read-aloud, Amer tells her young audience to “grab your grownup” to order the book online. Despite the claims made in the picture book, data has proved that abortion is detrimental not only to the murdered child but also to the baby’s mother.
In September 2022, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) released a fact sheet debunking common myths about abortion. The group explained that “abortion is associated with 49.5 maternal deaths per 100,000 women compared to a rate of only 8.1 per 100,000 for all external causes of death after delivery.”
AAPLOG presented further evidence that abortions are linked to higher probability of pre-term births in the future, which may lead to health complications after pregnancy. A more recent study also showed that mothers who abort their first child use mental health resources at significantly higher rates than women who have live births.
“What’s an abortion, anyway?” was published in 2022 and is described as “a medically accurate, non-judgmental, and gender-inclusive resource for young folks about abortion care [sic].” The book’s official website also describes the author, Carly Manes, as a “queer” and “full-spectrum doula from New York.”
“She has always believed that young people deserve transparency when it comes to information about their sexual health and bodies,” her bio continues. “Carly has been a practicing abortion doula for over six years, supporting more than 2,000 individuals during their in-clinic procedures [sic].”
The illustrator, who uses the name Emulsify for her work, describes herself as a “genderqueer cultural worker and full-spectrum doula,” including “they/them” pronouns in her bio. She also “believe[s] all art is powerful and political.” While some illustrations clearly depict women, other people drawn in the pages appear to represent those who self-identify as LGBT.
According to her website, Amer “created [her] beloved LGBTQ+ [sic] family web-series Queer Kid Stuff in 2016 which now has 4M lifetime views and counting.” She has also written a book titled “Rainbow Parenting: Raising Queer Kids and Their Allies” and her first picture book —called “Hooray for She, He, Ze, and They” — will be published in fall 2024.
In 2018, one of Amer’s videos sparked outrage among Colorado parents after it was shown to elementary students to push “transgender awareness” on young children.
