TOPEKA, Kansas, October 22, 2015 (LifeSiteNews) – A retired abortionist who brags about doing some of America's first abortions has compared unborn children to cancer cells.

According to a quote tweeted by the pro-abortion news site RH Reality Check, Dr. David Grimes said that a “D and E abortion is not a problem, any more than a mastectomy is a problem. Both are solutions to a problem.”

A mastectomy is an aggressive cancer treatment that removes a woman's breast partially or completely in order to eradicate cancer from her body and thus save her life. An abortion is an operation that kills a living person in a woman's womb for reasons that are, in more than 99 percent of cases, unrelated to saving a woman's life.

It is unknown how many of America's more than one million abortions end the life of a baby girl. However, in 2014, approximately six percent of the girls who would have been born that year were aborted in Planned Parenthood abortion clinics, and there is evidence that sex-selective abortions take place in America.

Just Facts president James Agresti* told LifeSiteNews that Grimes's comparison is “scientifically illiterate.”

“There is a profound difference between a part of a human being – whether a breast, a finger, an appendix, etc. – and the human being as a whole,” said Agresti. “Science is very clear that that unborn humans are just that: humans.”

Grimes's quote comes as he was cited at length in a New York Magazine article regarding his past as one of America's first abortionists. It was in reference to Kansas's ban on dismemberment abortions, for which “D and E” is another name.

In April, Kansas became the first state in the nation to ban these abortions, though the law was blocked by a judge in June. Last week, a similar law was blocked in Oklahoma.
