Frank Stirk, writer for Focus on the Family recalled yesterday that in July 1999, Exelgyn spokeswoman Catherine Euvard said that, “as soon as [RU-486] is launched on the US market, we will apply for registration [in Canada], but not before. It would be very difficult to have it in Canada and not in the United States.” Clinical trials on RU-486 are underway in British Columbia.

Also Mexican Catholic Church leaders are reacting to the possible introduction of RU-486 in Mexico. Cardinal Norberto Rivera, Archbishop of Mexico and Cardinal Juan Sandoval, Archbishop of Guadalajara both vowed the Church would fight the abortion pills introduction.

The Washington Post reported Monday that most health insurers in the US have agreed to cover the cost of RU-486. Those agreeing to cover the abortion pill as a standard benefit include: Aetna, United HealthCare and Cigna. PacifiCare will leave the decision up to its doctors, because it considers the pill a new method of performing abortions, rather than being a new drug. Humana Inc. and Kaiser Permanente are undecided on coverage. The paper reports that in keeping with standard abortion coverage, insurers will give employers the choice of whether to offer the benefit to their workers. The cost is estimated to be $300-$700.
