RUSSIA, July 3, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – This fall, Russian lawmakers in the Duma (lower house) will be debating a proposal calling for restrictions on abortions beyond the first trimester.  Russia’s current legislation amounts to abortion on demand even in the second trimester since a requirement list includes such items as low income and insufficient housing.  With recent statistics showing abortions outnumbering births two-to-one, the state has seen a need to act.  Alexander Chuev, a deputy who is vice-chairman of the Duma’s committee on religious organizations, explained the need for a new restrictive law saying, “We are losing population and we have this very serious sexual revolution destroying society.”  Russia has a long history of destructive abortion practices with the Marxist Soviet Union being the first country in the world to legalize the practice in 1920. Currently a complete abortion in Moscow costs only 640 rubles, or $27.50 and women are known to have as many as sixteen abortions.  See Globe and Mail coverage:  https://www.globeandmail.ca/servlet/story/RTGAM.20030702.uabort0701/BNStory/International/  See previous LifeSite coverage:  RUSSIAN ABORTIONS STILL OUTNUMBER BIRTHS 2-1 https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2001/feb/01021604.html
