OTTAWA, June 18 (LSN) – In a surprising move, some courageous Liberal Senators refused to vote for the $30 billion dollar pension appropriation bill which included a controversial same-sex pension benefits clause. The controversial bill was recently passed in the House of Commons. Among the Liberal abstainers was Anne Cools, again proving herself to be a fearless example of a politician of integrity who sees her obligations as being first to nation and family, rather than blind allegiance to party dictates.  In the Senate on Wednesday Cools explained her objection to bill C-78’ s same-sex benefits clause noting “it fails to protect the institution of marriage” and “it is the duty of Parliament to uphold and protect marriage and to legislate accordingly.” Cools deplored the cowardly manner in which the government was implementing controversial policies including burying issues in other bills and also allowing judicial activism to rule.  With the absence of full support from Liberal Senators, Tory opposition to the bill was able to remand the bill back to committee, which means a delay until at least September.  For Wednesday’s pension debate see:  https://www.parl.gc.ca/36/1/parlbus/chambus/senate/deb-e/151db_1999-06-16-e.htm#0.2.X57BJ2.D7JNTA.21YGDF.N
