REGINA, Tue Apr 26, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Following last week’s comments by well known pro-life Saskatchewan Conservative MP Brad Trost, where he thanked pro-lifers for their work in getting International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) federally defunded in 2009, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall has joined Prime Minister Stephen Harper in declaring that the abortion status quo in Canada will remain unchanged.

Trost had also urged pro-lifers to put pressure on the Saskatchewan provincial government over the issue: “A lot of MLAs know what the right thing’s to do in their hearts, they just need to be motivated to do a little bit more action and a little less thinking about the issue, because they know what to do,” he said.

“As long as I’m prime minister, we are not reopening the abortion debate,” said Harper last Thursday at a hockey rink in Conception Bay South, N.L. “This is not the priority of the Canadian people, or of this government. The priority is the economy. That’s what we’re going to focus on.”

On the same day, Premier Wall told reporters at the legislature that his Saskatchewan Party government has no intention of changing the policies on abortion.

“We have different personal views in our caucus on the issue but we have support in our caucus, and I can’t think of an instance where it’s not unanimous support, for the position of the government, our position of our party, which is that there would be no change to the funding formulas for abortions,” he said.

Both Harper and Wall were reacting to MP Trost’s remarks at the Saskatchewan Pro-Life Association convention, where he said the work of compiling petitions against Planned Parenthood was “very, very useful and they were part of what we used to defund Planned Parenthood because it has been an absolute disgrace that that organization and several others like it have been receiving one penny of Canadian taxpayers dollars.”

“They’re still trying to get their snout back in the public trough and so there’s going to be a lot of pressure,” Trost added.
