PALOS HEIGHTS, Illinois, July 30, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer has denounced ‘Self’ Magazine for misrepresenting 45 years of research that implicates abortion as a risk factor in breast cancer. Self’s August 2002 issue carries an article entitled, “Abortion and breast cancer: The truth on trial,” in which author Barry Yeoman makes a case that the abortion-breast cancer link is little more than a “controversial theory.” However, countless studies have drawn the link, most recently The Lancet, which reported that women who bear more children and who breast feed longer reduce their risk of breast cancer. Karen Malec, president of the Coalition, noted that Self Magazine sells advertising space to pharmaceutical companies that manufacture abortifacients—and drew a parallel between (a.) companies that promote contraception and abortion while profiting from related advertising, and (b.) companies that failed to inform the public in the 1950s “about risks associated with tobacco because of the hefty revenues received from tobacco advertising.” History has a way of repeating itself, she said.
