AMRITSAR, India, March 29, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) The international scope of the Liberal government’s attempt to pass into law Bill C-38 allowing same-sex marriages was confirmed again when Sikh-Canadian MP’s were urged to block the bill by their spiritual leader in India. This warning is the second such declaration made in the last three months, the first coming when Prime Minister Paul Martin was visiting India in January.

Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, the world’s highest Sikh authority, again warned the six Sikh Members of Parliament that support for C-38 would result in their ostracization. Vedanti is quoted in a Toronto Star article as saying “Most of the Sikh community would resent them, and the majority of the Sikh population living in Canada would boycott them.”

While there are only six MPs who are of the Sikh faith the repercussions for the Paul Martin government are serious, especially in Ontario, where three of the members are from the Brampton area: rookie Liberal MP Navdeep Bains (Mississauga-Brampton South); Liberal MP Gurbax Malhi (Bramalea-Gore-Malton) and Liberal Ruby Dhalla (Brampton-Springdale). Mr. Bains and Ms. Dhalla have both expressed support for Bill C-38.
