GLASGOW, Scotland, July 22, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Six couples who have agreed to become the parents of the first clones will be smuggled out of Britain “to an unnamed developing country” this year, according to a report from Glasgow’s Sunday Herald. One of the six couples, Bill and Kathy from the U.S. (their surnames are secret), say fertility scientist Panos Zavos will oversee the operation and perform the experiment.  A report quotes the couple: “We want children so badly and we have tried so hard and for so long. No one has tried as hard as Kathy has to have children,” said Bill, a high school teacher in his fifties married to Kathy, a sales representative in her mid-40s who spent a total of 24 months in IVF treatments which included receiving injectible drugs for 17 months—and refuses to accept the unsuccessful outcome.  Some of the couples have requested a baby boy, in which case a clone of the father will be attempted by taking the nucleus from one of his cells, the report said. If the couples want a girl, an attempt will be made to clone the mother.  To read the couple’s dubious arguments for participating in the scheme see: https://www.sundayherald.com/26361   For the original Glasgow Herald coverage see:  https://www.sundayherald.com/26441
